It’s always a blessing when Yung Nef comes to visit. My nieces and nephews all come to visit on their own time, very rarely do they come together, they all want their own individual time. This past weekend while Nef was in town for some workouts, he made time to come home for dinner. Yall should’ve saw it… I made a tricky fish recipe where I cooked fried catfish with a Crawfish Etouffee over a bed of dirty rice… with the garlic toast points! When I tell yall he was scraping the last 3 rices off that plate!!! I said, “Nef it’s more in there… go ahead the kitchen is yours.” We laughed and I thought to myself… Damn, you professional athletes can’t just have a 6pc nugget and fries and gone bout yo business. Yall have to eat like vikings to support the performance of your body to display your God given talents.
After dinner we retired to the workshop so I could show him the new stuff I’m about to drop, some new books I got for christmas and the College Playoffs. And that’s how the conversation always starts…
Nef: Hey Unc… what’s that right there? with the map and the notes and the strings… what’s that?
Me: That’s what I call a passport, highlights everywhere I been and stood on the brand. So when you think you ain’t accomplished nothing because you not seeing the results you wanna see… take a look right there and see how far you’ve came and where you need to go next.
Nef:….Damn, that’s real.. that make sense. That was smoove.
Then in that moment… he let’s his hair down and we talk about it all. Dreams, goals, life… resentment, faith… Integrity… work ethic. You ever see a youngsta light up when they get to talking about something they passionate about? Not the sports they play… not because J Cole dropped a new verse… but just pure joy and passion about an idea that they would love to try. It’s a beautiful thing. We stay up to 2am just talking about everything from Big Krit to Keith Haring paintings. The next morning we wake up and go for a walk and continue our talks from last night. We take some pics in the new gear for the website and he says,
Nef: “Yeah Unc anytime you need a model Im yah boy… just next time im a get a haircut first! Hahahaha.”
Me: Hahaha whatever you wanna do Nef you have my support no matter what, even if you tryna be Michael. C. Jordan. You ain’t Michael B.. you Michael C hahaha.
What a day… I said all of that to say… Be that place of peace. God put you here for a reason… my therapists tell’s me “Be the change you wanna see” so I’m just finally accepting it. I truly love it when my nieces and nephews come to visit. They don’t come to vent or discuss the world’s problem’s… but simply to talk about the information they’ve obtained on their journey to their goals, with Unc. I tell all the youngsta’s to keep a OG around and I tell all the OG’s to keep you a youngsta around… both can teach and both can learn.
